ANTHROPOLOGY MAJOR REQUIREMENTS PRIOR TO 2006

Anthropology courses: 36 hours (including 102-103,220,230,240,270)
Supporting coursework: 18 hours (chosen in consultation with an
advisor)
Anthropology minor: 18 hours (chosen in consultation with the
Major
Department Advisor)
Anthropology, which views human behavior and society
(both past and present) in a cross-cultural perspective, combines
scientific
and humanistic interests in a modern social science framework. It
consists
of biological anthropology (human genetics and evolution and the
zoological
order of primates), archaeology (the prehistory of cultures and the
origins
and growth of human technology), sociocultural anthropology (the
comparative
study of social structures and institutions from simple hunter-gatherer
to complex urban settings), and anthropological linguistics (the
comparative
study of languages and communications). Anthropology is an appropriate
major for those seeking a general liberal education, for those
preparing
for professional study and careers in law, medicine, or commerce, and
for
those planning further graduate study in anthropology Professional
anthropologists
work as research scientists and teachers in museums, universities, and
archaeological surveys or as staff members in government agencies,
social
service programs, and business firms where international understanding
of human and social concerns are important.
Major In Anthropology
The
36 hours in anthropology must include ANTH 102 and ANTH 103 and 220,
230,
240, and 270. The Departmental Advisor may waive a 200 level course
requirement,
but the student will still be required to take 36 hours of Anthropology
coursework. Four courses totaling at least 12 hours in anthropology
must
be at the advanced level (generally 291 and 300 level courses). All
students
must discuss their selection of anthropology courses and supporting
coursework
with a departmental advisor. Students must take at least 18 hours of
supporting
coursework in another department. At least 9 hours of the supporting
coursework
must be at the advanced level. Students may substitute an official
minor
offered by another department for the supporting coursework.
Modifications
of these requirements can be worked out between the student and advisor
and, with the approval of the head of the department, will be submitted
to the college office to establish individual requirements for a major.
