Ph.D., Indiana University, 1953. On the U of I faculty (Professor of Music and Anthropology) since 1964. Since 1992, Professor Emeritus of Music and Anthropology, continuing to teach part-time and advise graduate students.
Principal interests: ethnomusicology; musical cultures of Native American peoples, Iran, and South India; theory and methodology of ethnomusicology; ethnomusicological study of Western classical music culture.

I teach only one course per year, and this may be offered in the School of Music, or jointly by Music and Anthropology. Among the courses taught in the last few years are:
