This volume develops an anthropology of knowledge focused on the expertise of artist-blacksmiths of the United States and, to a lesser extent, Western Europe. We explore the fundamental organizing principles of the craft, its aesthetics and the technical knowledge smiths apply in their productions. We investigate the design of work shop space and the arrangements of tools within this space for visual access and inspiration. We address the role of imagery, both visual and kinesthetic, in forging practice, and discuss the complementarity of visual and verbal reasoning.
